Thiamine (Vitamin B-1) is an essential coenzyme in energy production. Thiamine is converted quickly into thiamine pyrophosphate, which is required for glycolytic and Krebs cycle reactions. Thiamine also appears to be related to nerve impulse transmission. Thiamine Tetrahydrofurfuryl Disulfide (TTFD) helps to regulate blood glucose by effecting the production of ATP which is the fuel for cellular energy. Recent research has shown that TTFD may be a superior form of B1 and its benefits might be just what we need to help so many pre-diabetics, diabetics and athletes achieve something that they all share in common - superior glucose management and excess glucose disposal.

Thiamine's benefits as a glucose supporting agent are so sure that even the US Government's established RDA is based upon a 0.5 Mg per 1000 calories of dietary consumption as opposed to a milligram-per-pound-of-body-weight like other vitamins.

Some studies with TTFD have been shown to enhance glucose utilization and glucose oxidation in both resting and athletic performance settings. This fat soluble form of B1 is absorbed easily by the body, leads to higher blood levels of Thiamine than frank Thiamine supplementation and appears to pass the blood-brain-barrier effectively. Since the Brain requires precise glucose utilization those suffering from CNS-related disease like Alzheimer's Disease should pay attention to this form of B1. Non-caffeinated energy drinks would also do well to pay attention to this form of B1 since its effects on alertness and cognition may outperform their favorite form of Thiamine. And ergoneic supplement formulators out there may do well to add TTFD to their Creatine / Beta Alanine blends as this form of B1 should have a complimentary effect on performance and staving off fatigue.
